Turning the Page: the future of ebooks

This new study examines trends and developments in the eBooks and eReaders market in the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany, and discusses major challenges and key questions for the publishing industry worldwide. It also identifies market opportunities and developments for eBooks and eReaders, and makes recommendations for publishers, traditional retailers, online retailers, and intermediaries.

Given that publishers, internet bookstores, and companies that manufacture eReaders have high expectations for the digital future of the book industry, the study asks if a new generation of eReaders may, at last, achieve the long-awaited breakthrough that lures consumers away from paper and ink.

Digital Information Conference 2010

28 October 2010 – Kings Place, London

Librarians and information professionals are faced with a large number of choices when migrating content online. CILIP’s Digital Information Conference titled ‘The challenge of choice’ provides delegates with clarity to interpret the implications for their organisations.

This comprehensive and thought provoking conference is divided into four key sessions and allows for extensive interaction and debate throughout the day. It is ideally timed to take a considered view of the post-Election social, political and economic environment and the potential impact of the Coalition Government’s policies. It provides a sounding board for those seeking to balance the need for innovation and continued service delivery with a changed environment defined by severe budget cuts and reduced resources.

Conference highlights include:

 *     leading industry experts, case studies and parallel sessions

*     presentation on dealing with new digital challenges in academic libraries

*     Publishers Lookup Award presentation

*     opportunity to question speakers and debate the issues

E-books on the agenda – an update

An excellent update from Karl Drinkwater on e-books and e-book readers:

E-books exchange of experience – Friday 5th March

WHELF organised this event at UWIC in Cardiff as an opportunity for librarians in Wales to share their experiences of e-books.

In the morning, librarians from three of the universities (Swansea University, UWIC, Cardiff University) talked about their e-book collections.

Karl Drinkwater has a good summary of the ensuing discussion on his blog - this includes the issue of publicity for e-books and many of the good ideas which were suggested.

In the afternoon Karl gave two presentations, a short one on the E-books for FE Project, and a long one on E-book Readers and their potential uses for libraries. If you are interested in the latter subject then he has written an article on it which should appear in the next issue of SCONUL Focus.

Finally, Sue Mace gave a short presentation on the WHELF deal with NetLibrary (shorter than expected because of the fire alarm and subsequent evacuation of the building!) This also included a brief overview of  the NOWAL NetLibrary deal. The November 2009 presentation by Sue Hodges, Consortial E-books – Skeleton in the Cupboard or White Elephant? can be viewed online at: http://www.nag.org.uk/documents/NAGNoWALpresentation26Nov2009Sue.ppt

The next steps include a survey of e-book collections and suppliers being used in Wales and a decision regarding the WHELF NetLibrary deal.

Building on collaboration: the WHELF e-book deal

An article by Jeremy Atkinson and Paul Riley in SCONUL Focus, Number 45, 2009: http://www.sconul.ac.uk/publications/newsletter/45/31.pdf

In December 2007, at an event at the National Library of Wales, WHELF launched its innovative e-book deal arranged with the Online Computer
Library Center (OCLC). During the launch event there were various presentations, including coverage of WHELF and its collaborative activities and an overview of the project. This article reviews developments to date.

WHELF e-books consortium

A year ago WHELF launched a new collaborative e-books service with OCLC. NetLibrary provides 85,000 Welsh students and National Library users with access to over 700 e-book titles.

The consortium has now been given representation on an International Advisory Board to work on future developments to NetLibrary e-books services. Steve Lee from the University of Glamorgan is our representative on the Board. Steve has asked all participating institutions to give responses to a questionnaire from NetLibrary regarding future developments to the e-books service in terms of platforms and other matters. Steve will be forwarding feedback to NetLibrary so that they have a collective Welsh view. There will be regular reports from Steve on any developments in services as these become clear.
