CDG and UC&R Wales – Dylan Thomas Literary Trail

The “lovely, ugly town” of Swansea is the birthplace of Dylan Marlais Thomas, one of the most famous poets writing in the English language in the Western World during the twentieth century….. Dylan (as everyone seems to know him) was born in Swansea on 27 October 1914, and lived at 5, Cwmdonkin Drive, Uplands, until he was twenty.  During this period he wrote approximately two thirds of all his poetry together with many of his short stories and copious letters.
From ‘Poets, Priests and Pubs’ by Paul Barrett

On Sunday 11 July 2010, the Wales divisions of the Career Development Group and UC&R will be meeting up to hold their joint annual sponsored walk.  This year we will be heading for Swansea City Centre to follow the Dylan Thomas Literary Trail.  We won’t be using sponsorship forms this year.  Instead we’ll be asking for a minimum donation of £2.50 per walker (children free).  Money raised will be split equally between our respective charities:

Career Development Group – International Projects (in support of libraries and information professionals in the developing world)

Book Aid International
http://www.cilip.org.uk/get-involved/special-interest-groups/ucr/activities/pages/charity.aspx

You don’t have to be a CDG or UC&R (or even a CILIP) member to attend, and please bring along as many colleagues, friends and family as you can.

For bookings and further information, please contact Elizabeth Kensler – 01970 621848 / eak@aber.ac.uk

Joint UC&R Wales and Cilip Cymru Wales Marketing Your Services Event – Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, Wednesday 3rd March 2010

Programme:
Morning: Visit to Welsh National Opera and Welsh Music Information Centre (Ty Cerdd)

This includes departments specifically specialising in areas including Development, Finance, Marketing, Media, Planning, Technical and WNO MAX (www.wno.org).

11–11.30am: Tour of Welsh Music Information Centre.  (Only limited places available)
The Welsh Music Information Centre (WMIC) aims to support and promote all genres of Welsh music. It collects and holds research scores of Welsh composers, recordings of Welsh music and reference materials, and provides an information service on music in Wales (www.wmic.org).

11.30am–1pm: Lunch break. Time to explore the Wales Millennium Centre and Cardiff Bay catering facilities independently.

1pm–1.10pm: Introduction to the Marketing Workshop by Lloyd Ellis, Chair of Cilip Cymru Wales.

1.10pm–3pm: “‘How do you like your eggs in the morning?’: a simple 7 step toolkit for creating strategic marketing plans that really work.”  Kay Grieves, University of Sunderland. Venue: David Morgan Suite, Wales Millennium Centre.

The Strategic Marketing Toolkit puts your customers at the centre of service planning, delivery and promotion. Its 7 easy steps will help you to create marketing plans that clarify distinct service offers, target key customer groups and communicate the benefits of your services effectively.
Originally developed by University Library Services at the University of Sunderland, the toolkit has now been employed for various purposes at Sunderland and beyond, and has proved to be both highly accessible and transferable.

The aim of today’s workshop is to share with you the concept of the toolkit and its core techniques,  so that you can translate it for your own needs – ensuring your customers fully engage with your services and that you are able to demonstrate the real difference you are making to them.

This workshop, including tours and light refreshments, is available free of charge thanks to sponsorship by Cilip Cymru Wales.
